all flowers in time is the debut album from space captain, built around the themes of love and nostalgia with a pinch of bitterness and betrayal. with intricate arrangements of fluttering guitars, sparkly keyboards, and cyclical layers of background vocals, all bound together with dreamy indie-pop melodies for a sweet curve-ball of a finish, this beautifully crafted release takes the brooklyn 7 piece to new heights. extensive influences range from thundercat through amy winehouse to bon iver, but space captain are never anything but themselves, as this release shows. it sees the band moving away from the electronic and experimental sounds of their previous ep, instead taking them back to when they first formed, whilst also pushing the boundaries of their familiar r&b realm. for the band, all flowers in time quite literally signifies the flowering of their careers and the work they have put in to get there

the penultimate release on optimo trax (at least for now) comes from tel aviv’s mighty kalbata. i was already a big fan and was so delighted when he got in touch to see if i would be interested in releasing something by him. unusually for optimo trax this is one track in 3 versions but each version is so different that often i play them all in one dj set. originally there were two versions but as kalbata is a renowned master of dub (check out the documentary online about him recording in jamaica), i gently persuaded him to do a no-holds-barred dub mix too which appears here as enkuan pt 3. a few words about the record from kalbata – i went to ethiopia in the beginning of 2017 to record musicians. the most memorable one was mulugeta teshome who plays the washint flute on this record. it’s a traditional ethiopian flute made out of wood, and mulugeta came to the studio carrying a whole bag of them, each one in a different key. we chose the scale and started the recording session. i ended up taking the tracks a lot further with the three cuts on the record but really it all started that day, in a small studio shack in addis ababa.

“never change a winnig team”. that s what radio citizen s niko schabel must have thought when he decided to release his fourth album once again on sonar kollektiv. after the success of “the night & the city” (sk310lp / cd) from 2015 and the productive collaboration ever since this seems like a wise resolution. schabel s idea to retrieve to a mountain cabin in salvenberg, tirol with his band and tons of equipment turned out to be an even more crucial factor to the cause. here they could create and record new songs and bring them together neatly for the new album. the 13 tracks assembled here on “silent guide” are – each on its own and in its entirety anyway – best proof how wonderfully this approach has worked out.

recently, superpitcher was invited to go on a safari in south africa. he bought a custom made safari hat at his favorite milliner in cologne (ju&#776,,,rgen eifler) and set off with big eyes and a pair of binoculars. it was wild and wonderful and he saw many exotic (and big!) animals, even a leopard in a tree that told him the secret of the universe. he forgot what the leopard said because his mind was still playing and replaying the sound of what he heard on the first night of his arrival – the hypnotic and moving sound of the voices of africa, the voices of the wonderful tanda tula staff choir. there, the choir members work during the day at the camp and at night entertain the guests with their captivating voices and energetic dancing. so impressed was he with their songs and beautiful shangaan language that he decided to record a cd for them to sell in the shop at their camp and now this precious recording is also available through hippie dance / bush recordings on vinyl and cd for you in whatever wherever camp you are. the lp of the tanda tula choir comes with a very pretty poster.

after putting out kito jempere s stunning sea monster album earlier in the year, hell yeah now serve up a bunch of remixes from it that have been secret weapons for the last few months. behind them are black spuma, lipelis and bell towers and they all serve up real heaters. first up with possibly their best ever remix are black spuma—a collaboration between phillip lauer (tuff city kids, arto mwambe) and fabrizio mammarella (telespazio)—who flip ampa into a bootylicious house cut with fat bass stabs and sci-fi synths. it s retro in flavour and riddled with melodies that are brightly coloured and emotive, and when the vocal is layered in it helps carry you away on a wave of bliss. for djs who prefer to keep things raw, a dub version without the vocals is also included and bangs that bit harder.

hailing from the london rat race, mux step forward with the first release on teenage father and lay their distinctive style out for all to witness. their broad-reaching indie rock sound has undertones of electronica, grunge and a very british swagger that deserves to get them onto radio playlists and festival line ups aplenty. -mdma- rumbles along somewhere between soulwax, kasabian and queens of the stone age, while -teenage father- ups the intensity with a punky thrum behind the raucous guitars and grinding synths, and then -stray- finds the band mixing up the time signatures for the most adventurous cut on the record.

hauntological dub taking the mystical eastern melodica scales pioneered by augustus pablo and applying them to a unique mix of reversioned cult themes and roots rockers. doctor pablo was a key member of creation rebel as well as contributing to such canonical albums as cry tuff dub encounter volume 1 and some of the early hitrun records sides, a pre-cursor to on-u sound. it is also the third album appearance by the dub syndicate. features the much-loved dub re-rub of the theme tune to classic british science fiction show doctor who.

brian eno’s 1973 album back on vinyl, 180gr

astral dust is a 4 song excursion bridging the styles of derek michael and marshall applewhite. this project stems from a live recording of a set performed by michael in 2002. after being tucked away for almost 15 years, the recording was found and sent to applewhite who dissected the performance into fragments and breathed a new life into them. while some portions of this release are distinctly sludgy, the majority is a perfect amalgamation of both michaels and applewhites hard-edge, melodic borderline idm styles. the digital release will feature 2 digital only sub cuts from the sessions.

new york native caiazzo releases the devotion on his and p.leone s e-missions imprint featuring three dusky techno tracks and a remix from white material co-founder young male. much like p.leone, caiazzo s debut release (entitled the dredge ) landed on work them records, spencer parker s label that s featured names such as radio slave, rodhad, dj richard and ryan elliot. launching e-missions earlier this year, the pair continue their high quality output by following up two releases from p.leone with three uncompromising original cuts from caiazzo himself. rolling percussion drives 917 (sportmixxx) whilst intoxicating drones operate throughout, making way for lifeform with its layers of thick synthesised sounds that build on top of a relentless drum composition with subtle but effective transitions. godbody offers a stripped back approach to techno with an intricate percussive composition that allows a deep low-end and a hypnotic perc to take control. finally, white material label boss young male provides his take on godbody where bass hits combine with haunting atmospheres and warped rhythms, closing the release with style.

the fifth and final volume of random numbers split series is released. a split of the most experimental italian scene in 5 volume. to each artist is assigned a side of a c50 cassette, in which to let the music speak without compromises. volume 5 is entrusted to attilio novellino and collin mckelvey. the latest issue of the split series wants to be a bridge to future random numbers publications. in this case the two artists involved instead of dividing the two sides of the cassette decided to merge their productions into a collaboration. started in 2014, the collaboration between attilio novellino and collin mckelvey produced two albums: hypehunt and me&#768,,taphisiques cannibales. sons of the same approach, shared by similar sound sources and similar compositional techniques, the two works find in the different suggestions around which they are made, the specificity that allows them to grasp its essence, autonomous and complementary at the same time.

edition of 200 copies, screen printed sleeve ... lcn was present on the “noblesse oblige” compilation (gooiland 23) with a sweaty ebm influenced track… on this 4 track ep you can expect dark and cold elektro sounds… it is reminiscent of invasion planete and kommando 6 output but with a cleaner and more modern sound… still if you like(d) these early 2000’s elektro sounds you will love this too… this ep follows up on the steady stream of releases lcn has been putting out lately… among them on labels as frigio records and return to disorder… but this is probably his most dark and freaked out release up till now…

thatmanmonkz and simba have both been dropping loads of tight house releases this year. over at gamm hq we ve been admiring their music from afar but have now managed to team them up together with a solid ep of house inspired reworks. split up over 4 tracks they snap elements from hip hop (tribe quest), r&b (e. badu) and disco. it s all deep, edgy and comes with a real gritty feel...just the way we like it.

rezz s involvement in the toronto scene helped grow her gritty style. events like bassmentality and older shows at the legendary guverment helped shape not only rezz, but an era of electronic music producers who became inspired from early dj college tours. mass manipulation is a commentary on how easily our minds can become manipulated by the things we consume in society. we consume heavily through the media, which, in turn, tries to curate our thoughts and dictate how we as humans are supposed to live and behave. this album plays off this idea and invites people to become hypnotized, allowing their brains to be manipulated by my music in the hope they might see things through a new perspective (perhaps an outer world viewpoint). one where everyone is free from the unrealistic expectations planet earth has drawn for them. a world of acceptance and hypnosis.

optimo trax presents a 4-track ep from germanys mathias schober, head honcho of berlin’s lossless label. as always we prefer to let our artists do the talking. heres what mathias has to say about this release - the idea behind all tracks on the ep was a simple setup of drums and one synth that would do a main sequence/sound, yet theres a lot of detail in all of them. in a certain way features a 808ish beat with a main sequence coming from a tiny monophon synth called atmegatron - 8bit love, it turned out being much more music than i thought it would be when i set everything up. but what rules are made for is the same setup but the sequence is a 101 and so are all the washed out fx synths. on is to break them i went a different route, i had the dub, delayed stabs synth first as i was messin with my moog and a space echo - which btw is used on every single track i release, if you haven’t noticed yet. so i was trying to build something around those stabs in order to fit the track to the others and so i ended up with another sequence coming from my moog. as there was still space on the record, i decided to add an ambient version of is to break them, i love the ambience on this track. i hope that my love for dub sounds is obvious enough on these tracks. happy i found such an excellent home for the ep!

hot on the heels of the first two parts comes part three of hoshs stories from sa talaia series. the series takes tracks from his recently released album of the same name and releases them on his new fryhide label. first up are two collaborations with pig&dan. atlantis is not a fairy tale, a spine tingling tune with shifting melodies above rolling rubber beats. it s emotive and colourful and sets a nice mood to start off. the second brotherhood balearea is deep and elastic, with nice rubber beats and spraying synths bringing some real dynamism to the table. one of those tunes sven väth would drop at those special ibiza after parties. awakening of the birds a collaboration with karmon takes off right there and keeps you in that trance but gets more groovy with its inducing light footed drums, airy hi hats and skyward melodies all zoning you out. last of all, meeting mia lee is a beautifully melodic track that really moves you and strikes a resonant chord with your heart as the smooth and deep house vibes unfold. speaking of heart it features the heartbeat of hoshs unborn daughter. once again then, this is another richly rewarding ep from the one and only hosh.

after releasing their first two releases on one disc, the third release on amsterdam imprint working titles is a release on its own. label founders scott franka & kaap are behind the label s third release that features two epic tracks from the dutch pair and again finds them exploring new and exciting techno territory with their lively machine jams.
first track poise i is a deep and dubbed out techno track with deft synths slowly shapeshifting and bringing sombreness to the quickened groove. it’s late night music to zone you out with sparse but rich detailing to keep your mind occupied and it gets ever-busier over the course of thirteen enthralling minutes. then poise ii is a 16 minute masterpiece that is watery and dubby. it has undulating synth currents and increasingly textured snares. building to a peak then pulling back, with occasional freaky vocal sounds and sci-fi motifs, it is a truly cinematic piece that closes out an ambitious ep.

the great metaphorical river has been lending itself to wise sayings for ages, usually as a manifestation of time, or in relation to how we see instances pass. it exists only as current, neither in the past nor the future, the present. rarely though do we look for guidance from the bodies of water that rest beyond a current’s reach: backwaters seen as stagnant and turbid. that they are, yet by nature they also collect, capable of shaping labyrinthine networks of canals and inlets with ecosystems all their own. backwaters let the present settle into the past, they’re a place apart from the flow where moments compile and mature.
kllo, an electronic pop collaboration between melbourne cousins chloe kaul and simon lam, waded in figurative backwater for much of 2016, amidst an extensive world tour. these were exciting times, the duo’s well worn ep furthered the promise of 2014 ep cusp, receiving millions of streams and landing kllo on festival stages as well as artists-to-watch lists. nonetheless, the stretch kept them far from home, isolated and vulnerable, treading through perpetual uncharted territory while yearning for the comforts of the familiar.
as a result, kllo’s full-length debut depicts inner adjustment to outer change. songs were written partially on the road and developed back at lam’s bungalow, a haven that harbors creative spontaneity and catharsis.

in the year 2053, two japanese musical explorers by the names of katsuyoshi and yousuke, travelled to the city of breda in the netherlands. whilst drinking beers in a park near the train station, they stumbled upon an old, partially decayed usb stick, hidden behind a trashcan. with usb technology being long absolete by then, they had no way of checking what was on there until returning back home to tokyo, where yousuke still had a macbook from around the turn of the century tucked away under his bed. after retreiving the data, the stick turned out to contain two 128kbps mp3s of unreleased coco bryce material. utilizing an extensive and painstaking radiocarbon dating procedure, they managed to pinpoint the production date to the spring of 2017. the tokyo natives then proceeded to reverse the mp3s back to their initial wav format via state of the art 2053 audio technology, and emailed them to richy at binary feedback, who subjected the files to a spot of mastering. richy immediately recognised the tunes from a series of youtube id request videos that had been doing the rounds for the previous 36 years. being the shrewd business man that he is, he decided to contact rick sanchez, who in turn teletransported the tracks back to 2017, dropping them off at an undisclosed dutch pressing plant. romanian visual artist raw parigi was contacted to sort out the labels, after which the records were pressed up and distributed to shops across the globe, hopefully making their way into the homes of hundreds of jungle and drumfunk enthusiasts worldwide. amen

say what you wanna say, but you have to give strahil velchev this: the manÆs a powerhouse. recording and playing live under the kink alias, he went on to become one of finest purveyorÆs of funk in techno and house. what it is, by definition, ainÆt exactly clear. and that is the beauty of it. kinkÆs music is unifying in the best possible way. channeling the spirit and feeling of a time where it didnÆt really matter who the faces behind the music were, kink plays with the elements of genres and sub-genres as if the future of it all is still wide-open. at the same time it could be accused of retro-fetishism, as much as the pope himself is infallible. the pure need to recreate moments, feelings and experience - rather than carbon copies of existing designs - was what started kinkÆs production work. hailing from bulgaria, it was nearly impossible to get your hands on all the records and music that fed into a system of raves, clubs and record shops that seemed far away from sofia, and financially it might as well have meant another galaxy. wanting to dj without having access to the tracks that spun the carousel meant that you had to create them yourselves. so, here we go with a private bootlegger gone public mastermind and one of the loudest voices in house, techno and beyond. from kinkÆs early productions with neville watson to his smash-hit for ovum, a cerebral album for macro, tons of remixes & tracks and his mind-bending live act, playground seems to take all that into a blender. simultaneously a sound-summary, the harvest of a field of ideas, and the exhibition of an artist in his prime, it also works as a sort of kink dictionary: avant-garde soundscapes stand next to boisterous bangers, classic club tracks and peak time emotions

on 005 ken turns away from the light and invites you into the dark with adelaide’s furious frank, who dishes up a selection of psychedelic burners and formidable squelch. on this release frank pays tribute to the many mushroom picking spots in the surrounding hills of his hometown, and does them justice with an assortment of broken beats, affected drum flourishes and paranoid synths. over the course of the 5-tracker, frank presents sounds for the frayed final edges of a night out dancing, where shadows start to play tricks on the mind and each remaining track poses more questions than answers. none typify this nervous energy more so than a2 “dangerous dancer”, with it’s smoked out electro punctuated by a wailing 303 intended for dancers that may have gone too far, but are willing to take the next step.

“i’ve said it before, but dancehall and its influence on uk music has been a massive inspiration for me, going way back to hearing chris goldfinger on radio 1 playing music that was like nothing else i’d heard before. i love that fundamental rhythmic pattern, and i love how within the same world you can have some tunes that are built around the sweetest melodies and harmonies, and others that are built around super-tuff minimal drums and crazy squeeks and bleeps.
when it came time to build another ep for critical, i decided to link up with my good friend and long-time collaborator rider shafique, who has a much deeper knowledge of this music than me, and together create something that references both old and new dancehall, while still being playable in the kinds of sets i ve become known for. there’s no halftime and no chopped-up jungle breaks here - we wanted to make something really focussed and even disciplined - and hopefully we’ve succeeded.
big shouts to the vocal collaborators - super hyped to work with stush on a tune, irah came through with the righteous fire, and tiffanie malvo absolutely bodied her beat - but ultimate biggups have to go to rider. this wasn’t a project where i made the beats and rider voiced them - for pretty much every tune, we worked and reworked the riddims together. we’re both stoked on the results, and it seems like people in the dance feel the same way.” - sam binga

after releasing space control an intergalactic journey into synthesizers, back in 2012, the theremynt duo went on to release a successful, if steady, stream of eps, including robotique de l amou r and vampiros discos (a tribute to brazilian filmmaker ze do caixao). with remixes coming from the likes of david carretta, acid washed and club bizarre, these were playlisted by scene djs such as marvin & guy and ivan smagghe, amongst others. now yann and eva are striking back with their second lp, parallels. it s a record that sees them changing their colour palette and mood, but one that s still haunted by ghosts that lurk within their synthesizers and drum machines. the 10 tracks still exhibit peel s ever shifting vocal style and yann s sophisticated arrangements. but the second lp oscillates between ballad and dancefloor, landing between cosmic disco influences, krautrock and other progressive techno sounds. as a bonus, the album also features a cover of famous 80 s anthem self control. hand numbered vinyl only! frits wentink s next release on his own bobby donny label finds him editing some tracks he has been playing on his radio show for a while. they are originally by vertiqua, a german lo-fi hip hop producer that remains unknown. the vinyl only record is limited to 500 copies. all four of these tracks have been edited to make them more suited to the dance floor. the a side comes as an edit that is all about woozy chords and loose, bumpy drums with a rapped vocal stitched deep into the arrangement. it s warm and intake for cosy dance floors. the b1 has organic boom bap drums and kicks, more tape delayed chords and a nice analogue feel all finished with a wordless but beautifully soul-infused vocal. last of all, the louche drums of on b2 are coated in vinyl crackle and laced up with more intoxicating and imperfect chords. this is a perfectly aged combination of hip hop and house that will get any floor bouncing.

tom flynn marks his first appearance on exit strategy, starting off with a strong package of four tracks. each of them tends towards a slightly different side of his ecstatic and clean production style - making this a very coherent well balanced collection of killers.

juris boiko (1954-2002) and hardijs ledinš (1955-2004) were the core members of the nsrd, which is best known as latvian avant-garde, postmodern, experimental and underground music group active in 1980s.
their activities were widely multidisciplinary and they can not be considered as purely musicians since none of them had a professional musical education. their creativity was manifested through variety of media – music, performance and action art, visual arts, poetry, samizdat, the introduction video art in latvia etc. nsrd also made a significant contribution to the explanation of the theoretical aspects of art in the interpretation of the postmodernist movement, and developed the independent concept of “approximate art”. at the end of the 80s, nsrd got connected and performed with several artists and musicians living in west germany, including indulis bilz&#275,,,,,ns, micky remann and maximilian lenz aka westbam and others.

after a lengthy hiatus, tuskegee music is back with a heavyweight release indeed: it features tracks written by detroit heavyweights seth troxler—under his young seth alias— and cult fxhe boss omar s. amazingly they were written 11 years ago and have been long forgotten until recently being unearthed. the first track here was inspired by a trip seth made to berlin’s club der visionaere in 2005. “it basically was me returning to detroit and telling omar about this crazy music i heard ricardo play during the day.” the result, ‘deep’(cdv 2006 mix), is a spine tingling atmospheric deep house track. the drums are lo-fi and loose, the bassline is a meandering thing that really sucks you in and soft, gentle toms tumble around the groove and encourage you to cut loose. then comes the experimental slow motion drum shuffle of ‘detroit after midnight’ which the pair made after “finding loads of weird records in his basement sampling them and making a classic mpc detroit cut.” it has the sounds of people talking as if coming from the room next door laid over a lazy and undulating bassline, and is brilliantly weird and sketchy. last of all, young seth goes solo on ‘luiza’s inferno’ five minutes of him jamming on omar’s ms20 with a warbling synth line coated in warm tape hiss and layers of dust. it’s a beatless piece that shows how inventive and ahead of his time troxler was even as a young man. this is a brilliantly unusual ep and another winner for seth troxler and the martinez brothers’ tuskegee label.

part three in alden tyrell s latest project: -vorm variaties-, a 5 release series consisting of tracks recorded in the last 2 years. the -vorm variaties- tracks were a -style excercise- for tyrell, flexing his producermuscle while health issues forced him to stop touring. initially he had no intention to release these tracks but we found them so good that we were almost forced to start this series. all tracks selected are variations on classic techno forms, using classic style ingredients and the 909. all 5 -variaties- are different in style, yet all homogenous, all with alden tyrell s sound signature... on point production skills and stripped down arrangements.

born in a remote log cabin deep in the scottish highlands, eventual reality, the debut album from the james l’estraunge orchestra melds jazz and electronic music sensibilities with a huge helping of heart and soul. in 2014 seasoned producer and musician ricky reid and his partner retreated from the city to embark upon a new life, in his own words “away from the constant, incoherent noise of the world”. as he set up his studio, the clean air and spectacular surroundings began to provoke musical inspiration like never before. then, like a scene from ‘field of dreams’, a series of talented musicians from his former life visited the cabin for a series of late night jamming and recording sessions, leaving behind them hidden treasures to be discovered and lovingly pieced together by ricky over the following months. with nostalgia so much a part of the album’s creation, the james l’estraunge orchestra can’t help but appear somewhat spectral, after all they are truly the band that never was.
